Short Cropped Hair

Photo by Elina Sazonova on Pexels.com

How long is your hair?

In case you are wondering… I have short cropped hair. Last week, I heard on BBC World Radio that the Olympic Gold medalist for Archery, An San from South Korea has been labelled a feminist and man hater by her countrymen because she has short cropped hair!!!!! I am shocked!

In Scotland, I know of some overly religious christians who find it hard to accept my short hair. They like to quote certain verses from the New Testament to justify their views.

I have always had short hair. When I was young, it was my parents who were adamant that I should have short hair to suit my scrawny face and figure!

Strangely, I don’t know of anyone my age who have short hair so I tend to stand out in a crowd which I don’t mind at all!

By the way, I am not a feminist neither am I a man hater!

Unusual Use for Hairspray!

During the first lockdown that started in March 2020, I decided to buy a bottle of hairspray to tame my crop. According to my hairdresser, if you have long hair, it will grow downwards unlike mine that was growing upwards and in all directions! I bought the biggest Loreal Elnett that was available but sadly thanks to my sensitive skin, it didn’t agree with me.

The huge bottle of Loreal Elnett has been sitting on our dressing table for over a year now when a few weeks a ago I had a Eureka moment.

Regular readers will know that I am an amateur calligrapher even though I don’t blog about it very much. The inks that I use are lovely to use but sadly not waterproof. I had been looking for a way to waterproof my work but to no avail.

One night, the thought that I might be able to use hairspray to waterproof my work came to my mind! The next day I googled my idea and found that it is possible even though it is not a popular solution. I decided to test it and I am pleased to say that so far it is working very well.

Today is the first time hairdressers are allowed to open for business in England and I got my haircut this afternoon!!!!!!!! How fabulous is that??? I was expecting to feel ecstatic but I just feel normal. The last time I had a professional haircut was in December 2020, a few weeks before Christmas!!!!!! I am so glad to have had my haircut as I was beginning to resemble a highland cow!!!! However, I keep giving myself a wee fright whenever I look at myself in the mirror as I don’t recognise myself!!!

Lockdown Haircut!

About a week ago, The Mhinisteir offered me a haircut using his beard trimmer! Guess what? I accepted it! Since I have a boyish haircut, I couldn’t think of anything that could go awfully wrong.

I have to say that I had my heart in my mouth when he first started trimming off my hair but I really shouldn’t have worried because he has done a superb job! My hairdresser might disagree though!

Duh Moment

Yesterday, the temperature outside was -3.5c while today it is -1c!!! Needless to say that it is bitterly cold.

This morning, I happened to go to the utility room for something shortly before the hairdresser’s arrival. While I was there, I looked out of the window and saw Christmas lights!!!! I thought someone had put up Christmas lights outside our window. Who might that be???? We never have Christmas lights inside let alone outside!!! Just when I was about to call out to the Mhinisteir, I decided to look again and realised that they were icicles!!!!!!!!!! What a numpty!!!! The icicles looked beautiful though!!!!!!!!

Lockdown 2.0

  • On Saturday just before 3pm, we heard that the Prime Minister was going to have a press conference at 5pm. Turned on the radio but no press conference. There was no news as to what time the actual press conference was going to be. I gave up and went to have an early dinner. In the Radio news at 7pm, it was reported that the Prime Minister has announced a second National Lockdown to commence on Thursday. Rumour is that one of the reasons for the confusion with the press conference timing was because of the BBC and Strictly come dancing.
  • There will be no Church services on Sundays but funeral services are permitted inside the Church. On top of that Foodbanks, AA meetings etc will be able to take place inside the Church. The people who came up with these rules obviously don’t know the primary function of the Church. Thankfully the head of the Roman Catholic church voiced his objections. Not sure why it took ABC so long to object!

  • Why is there such a demand for loo rolls? As usual, I got my Tesco delivery shortly after I started typing this. No loo rolls in sight. Don’t need them (yet!).

  • Rumour is that the lockdown will continue into the New Year. I wish people will understand how damaging this Virus can be.

  • For me, life before lockdown is not very different to life in lockdown. However, I will miss going to Church, my hairdresser and the cleaner.

Back to the Crop!

When the hairdressers were finally allowed to reopen in July, I decided that I will be a little more adventurous and go for a bob instead of my usual crop.

Fast forward to October, I have decided to go back to my trusty old crop.

My bob hairstyle didn’t suit me one bit. I always looked like as if I had just gotten off a roller coaster. I even bought a can of hairspray to try and tame my hair but to no avail.

Face Masks & Shields

Another face shield arrived this week.  This is the second face shield that I have bought in four weeks.  Both are for the Mhinisteir for when our Churches reopen.  Churches were officially allowed to reopen from the 4th of July but in rural parishes such as ours it is simply impossible as almost all our Church wardens are above 70 and shielding.  We can only open the Churches gradually.  Anyway back to the shield…..

When the first shield  arrived, the Mhinisteir opened the envelope, looked inside and  gave it back to me to assemble.  There were no instructions whatsoever!  It was just one big rectangular plastic sheet with a piece of plastic strip.  The only reason why I had ordered this particular shield was because the Mhinisteir had requested for a Shield that didn’t have  the words “Face Shield” printed on them!

When our hairdressercame a week later, she was wearing a shield identical to that of health workers.  She said it was easy to assemble and use.  I decided to go ahead and purchase a similar one.   It does have the words “Face Shield” on it.  Tough! I would rather the Mhinisteir has a shield than not!!!! This is no time to be fashion conscious!!!

The second shield arrived two days ago.  This time the Mhinisteir did take it out of the envelope and try it on!  That’s progress!

ps: I was trying to photograph the first shield for this post when I accidentally assembled it!  Sadly, the photo wasn’t a success! One can’t be good at everything!😜

Haircut at last!!!!

I finally had my haircut yesterday!  Woo hoo!!!  My last haircut was in February.  I had an appointment in March but it was one day after the lockdown was announced so it never came to pass.  I was very grateful to my hairdresser for putting me among the top on her list.

As desired, I went for a bob instead of my usual crop and I am liking it very much.  It feels strange to have slightly longer hair but it is certainly feeling much lighter compared to all that weight I was carrying for the last 3 months.

The Mhinisteir too got his haircut yesterday.  I am not keen for him to go to the barbers just yet so I had arranged for the hairdresser to cut his hair while she was at the Vicarage.

He is super pleased with his haircut.  What he doesn’t know is that I had to warn the hairdresser that he has a very traditional haircut like that of Jacob Rees Mogg and that it had to be scissors only.

Great British Haircut

Hope it wont be too long before he was able to ” unleash the Great British Haircut”. – Words of PM Boris Johnson

I have no idea what the Great British Haircut is but I too hope that it won’t be too long before the hairdressers are able to restart.  As the ever selfless wife,  I was in touch with my hairdresser to ask if the Mhinisteir could take my outstanding appointment and to say that I will take the next one available.  The Mhinisteir does have his own Barbers but I am not sure if he will even get an appointment but safety is also a concern.  My hairdresser comes to the Vicarage so it is safer in some ways.

At the moment, I am taking a leaf out of Margo Leadbetter of The Good Life fame by using scarves to tame my wild hair.  My pre corona hairstyle was like the journalist Melanie Philip’s.  Currently, it looks like Ma Larkin’s from the Darling Buds of May!!!!😱
