Whiskery

I never knew that the word “Whiskery” existed until last week when I tried doing the Polygon word quiz in the newspaper.

It is a constant fascination of mine that as human beings we are always learning something new!

Wedding Breakfast?

Thursday, 4th May 2023

I have never heard of the term “Wedding Breakfast”. However, since switching to the Times newspaper, I see them very often on the Marriages and Engagement section. Every Saturday, they feature a newly married couple with details about their wedding and there it usually says that the couple enjoyed a wedding breakfast with friends and family after their wedding which is usually in the afternoon! I was quite puzzled as to how it could be a breakfast if they were partaking in it in the afternoon!

I did a google search which came up with various explanations but nothing concrete to say why it is called a breakfast. I suppose it is another case of I will call it whatever I like!🤣🤣🤣

Almighty Faux Pas

Wednesday, 3rd May 2023

The Mhinisteir who rarely panicks, came running up the stairs shouting. I couldn’t figure out what he was saying until he came to the top of the stairs. “Sadiq Khan has fined us” he said while animatedly waving an envelope. Sadiq Khan?? For those who are not in the know, he is the Mayor of London. The penny dropped.

Until then, we had never heard of Ultra Low Emission Zone. According to the penalty charge notice, we had entered that particular area without paying! We didn’t know it existed!

The Mhinisteir who has a clean driving record was disappointed with himself that he should have been more careful. I don’t know how one can be careful if you don’t know something existed.

I on the other hand, as the vicarage’s chief financial controller was concerned that it will put a huge dent to our finances as we have some very big bills to pay in the next couple of weeks.

I was then dealt with another blow when the Mhinisteir said that there will be another penalty notice in the post as the one that arrived was for us entering and there should be one for leaving!

Well dear reader, the other one duly arrived last week!

Dairy Free Doesn’t Mean Vegan!

Since I was a child, I have suffered from dairy intolerance so I avoid dairy at all costs.

One observation that I have made over the last few years is that many from restaurants to individuals often mistake dairy free to be vegan. This means that I am often short changed. Several weeks ago, we were invited to a formal dinner. On the invitation card, we were asked to make our dietary requirements known and I duly mentioned my dairy intolerance.

When we sat down for our meal, I quickly realised that unlike the rest, I didn’t have a single piece of meat on my plate instead it was half filled with roasted tomatoes, a few slices of red pepper and some salad leaves. I came home hungry!

Right From Wrong

Today is a bank holiday in the United Kingdom. I imagine many around the world will be on holiday to mark Labour Day. Here in the vicarage, it is a normal working day for the Mhinisteir to catch up on paper work since there are no meetings or church services. I too tend not to take a break from blogging on bank holidays.

For several weeks now, as part of my planning ahead, I have been thinking about what to write for the next few weeks. Some days the words just flow but other days even though I have a topic in my head the words just don’t flow instead they get stalled!

Today’s topic is a difficult one but I have decided to go ahead and write. I used to think that I had no problem from distinguishing right from wrong. However, I am no longer so sure. The modern world is so confused and I have allowed myself to be confused with them! The Church too has become narcissistic and is forcing taking us down the wrong path!

Earlier in the year, I was the Mhinisteir’s plus one at a dinner party at his Big Boss’s house. I had to think a million times what I was going to wear. I never have this problem because I am quite decisive. However on this occasion, the one reason that was making me indecisive was the fact that others attending the party will not be dressed up and no they were not dressed up on that evening! Growing up I was taught that we dress up not only for ourselves but more importantly for our hosts as a mark of respect for their kind invitation! In this present day and age, It is proving to be very difficult to be on the straight and narrow!
